The condition of a woman from West Hill who was in a ‘critical’ condition after being involved in a head-on collision last weekend has improved slightly and is expected to recover, say police.

The driver of the silver Astra involved in a head-on collision on the A30 last weekend has been arrested for providing a positive roadside specimen of breath, Devon and Cornwall police have said.

The man has been bailed until December 18 while further police enquiries are carried out.

Police collision investigators are continuing to appeal for witnesses who may have seen a car driving ‘erratically’ at around midnight on Saturday October 20, into the early hours of Sunday morning, on the A30 near Exeter Airport.

Officers believe the silver Astra could have been driving the wrong way down the duel carriageway.

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesperson said police believe the Astra was travelling west on the east-bound carriageway when it collided head-on with a silver Seat travelling in the opposite direction.

A 48-year-old woman from West Hill who was travelling in the Seat suffered multiple ‘life-threatening’ injuries, requiring immediate surgery at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hopsital.

The 49-year-old car driver, thought to be her husband, was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesperson said: “The condition of the woman who was seriously injured in this collision has improved a little and it is understood that she is expected to make a recovery, albeit slowly.”
