Exmouth and District Rotary Club’s annual award of Citizen of the Year was presented jointly to Paul and Emma Baldwin.

The presentation to Paul and Emma of an inscribed Dartington rose bowl and certificate was in recognition of their long-standing dedication in organising and running the weekly Gateway Club at the Exmouth Rugby Club.

A Rotary spokesman said: “For many years they have organised programmes, events and holidays for the members - now reaching over 100.”

The Gateway Club is social group for adults with learning disabilities in Exmouth and its surrounds.

Founded in 1989, the club is run by volunteers and relies purely on donations and fundraising to operate.

It currently has more than 120 members, who have a wide range of disabilities.

The aim of the group is to help its members develop their social and independence skills, whilst giving them the opportunity to socialise with their peers in familiar surroundings whilst feeling safe and relaxed.

The group meets every Monday (including most bank holidays) at Exmouth Rugby Club – doors open at 6.30pm with activities running from 7pm to 9pm.
