One of the largest shipping containers in Europe has been built to house Exmouth’s new land train.

The massive 68-foot-long container will be delivered to the Maer Road car park this week.

It will become a secure garage for the brand new 60-foot train – the new engine shed having been rubberstamped by planners in April.

The first service of Exmouth’s new hourly land train will depart at lunchtime on Sunday, May 25.

And now all Stuart Line Cruises, the land train operator, is waiting for is the delivery of their bespoke new train from Germany next week.

The train, which will have three carriages and carry up to 60 passengers, will stop 11 times, forming a giant loop around Exmouth linking the beach to the town.

Arriving at each stop every hour, the service will link some of the best things there are to do in Exmouth – including the cinema, bowling, the beach, boat trips and shopping.

Helen Newton of Stuart Line Cruises said: “The container is believed to be the largest budget shipping container in the UK. It’s very exciting things are coming together.

“The container was being painted over the weekend and will be in place sometime this week.

“Obviously we want it in place before the land train arrives next Monday or
Tuesday.”

She said that the container, built by Budget Shipping Containers, would be an ideal engine shed.

Land trains are unable to reverse, so the tunnel-like design of the container is a perfect solution.

She added: “We are still looking for one or two more people to join our team.

“If you hold a PCV license you could be our next train driver. Or perhaps you’d prefer to join as a conductor.

“Both roles require and enthusiastic and self-motivated person who is happy to be a representative of Exmouth. “
