Come on cyclists, ring that bell!

Archant

Adrian Toole (Opinion- Rogue Cyclist - Journal - July 26, 2012) may well be disappointed regarding the incident in question but I’m sure that he isn’t surprised as such events are a regular occurrence.

Being somewhat hard of hearing means that one has no warning of the approaching ‘whispering death’.

Also, of course, even though one’s dog is on a lead, there is no opportunity to bring it close to heel. Being of an age, a ring of the bell (they’re a legal requirement so all bicycles will have them fitted) is considered a timely polite notice of the rider’s presence and not an ill-mannered signal to get out of the way.

So, come on you riders, ring your bell!

As if having to share the pavement with the cyclists is not enough, now it seems that we have to share it with riders of the equestrian variety.

Particularly if you live in Pound Lane! At least the dog owners are obliged to collect their pets’ ‘present’ which in view of the sheer bulk left by the equine mode of transport, the riders of which apparently are not required legally or voluntarily to make similar arrangements, pales into insignificance.

It is unfortunate perhaps that SOME riders do not offer the same courtesies that all demand of motorists.
