Broadcaster Clare Balding has experienced the delights of a walk along the River Otter for a forthcoming radio programme.

The presenter, best known for hosting TV sports coverage, is recording a new series of her show Ramblings for BBC Radio 4.

She was invited down by East Devon ladies’ rambling group The Diamond Ramblers, who had written to Clare suggesting that she join them for one of their favourite local walks along the South West coastal path and the River Otter.

Group member Cilla Franks said: “One of our members suggested I write to Clare, saying that we thought a group of 60-year-old (ish) ladies could be an inspiration to listeners who are overweight, unfit, or both, and think they’re too old to do anything about it. We’re living proof that it’s never too late!

“Clare and Lucy, her producer, said they wanted to do a waterways walk and I immediately thought of the River Otter and the coastal path.

“Afterwards, we always finish up at Otterton Mill for some tasty soup and gorgeous bread.”

Otterton Mill co-owner Caroline Spiller said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Clare and the Diamond Ramblers for lunch.

“They had all clearly had a great time and enjoyed their lunch.

“Clare said how much she had enjoyed the walk and hopes to return very soon to walk it with her dog!”

The River Otter walk is due to air on June 26 at 3pm, and on June 28 at 6am.
