Two Exmouth businesswomen have signed up to take part in the thrilling sport of roller derby – after top team the South West Angels of Terror held a recruitment drive.
The team, which includes Exmouth photographer Kimberly Rainford, came to the town last month, and now card designer Claire Close and Charlotte ‘The Cake Lady’ Hanson have taken part in their first training session.
Kimberly said: “I think it’s fantastic that girls are taking the leap to join us as it can be quite daunting getting your skates on if you haven’t worn them for a few years!
“We’re amazed at the response we’ve had, and this is in part due to the help and support we’ve had from the Journal in tracking our progress and introducing people to roller derby.”
Charlotte said: “From the minute I saw an article in the Journal about a local roller derby team winning the South West championships I knew I had to be a part of it!
“I never enjoyed the gym and was looking for a different form of exercise. Now I’ve found it and a whole bunch of people who enjoy it as much as I do!”
Claire said: “My husband and I spent the summer months skating along the seafront, when a friend told us about a local roller derby team.
“Now we’ve both enlisted – me into SWAT and my husband into [men’s team] The League Of Extraordinary Rollergents. It’s a really great team sport.”
