Church expansion back on agenda

PUBLISHED: 07:30 30 January 2014

A major expansion of Brixington Community Church is again to be considered by planners, after a wrangle about ownership of land at the site was resolved.

The scheme, for an expanded two-storey church, which would also house community facilities, on the existing site in Churchill Road, was due to be presented at East Devon District Council’s development management committee in October for a ruling on planning permission.

However, it was then withdrawn at the last minute, following concerns some of the land might not be in the ownership of the church.

After discussions with the church’s solicitors, EDDC planning officers say they are now satisfied that the church does own the land.

Officers have also restated their position from October that the plan should be approved, saying it would provide a focal point for the community, and provide room for an expanding congregation and community groups.

However, the scheme was previously opposed by neighbours of the site, in Elwood Road, and by Exmouth Town Council, on the grounds that the plan would be overbearing and cause a loss of privacy for neighbours, and fears about a lack of parking.

Councillors will make their decision at the Knowle, in Sidmouth, next Tuesday (February 4) at 2pm.
