Tesco provide more than a little help for needy youngsters in Pakistan

A Seaton charity volunteer asked Tesco for a little help – and got a big surprise.

Kathleen Miller is going to Pakistan to do voluntary work at a school where the pupils have few possessions.

So she went to the Harbour Road supermarket to buy some small gifts to give them and jokingly asked an assistant if she could have some discount.

But Tesco did more than that. Hearing about Mrs Miller’s aid mission the store’s community champion Rhoda Snell was able to give her lots of children’s items that were surplus to requirement. They included colouring-in books, pens and pencil cases.

This week Mrs Miller said how delighted she was with the gifts and praised Tesco for its generosity.

“I was so excited when they said I could have the items for free – I think Tesco are marvellous,” she said.

Mrs Miller has volunteered to help out at one of three schools in Pakistan run by a family she came to know while living in her native Scotland.

Although the former council catering manager moved to Seaton some two years ago, after taking early retirement, she has kept in touch with her former next door neighbour Nayyar Ganjua.

And now she has accepted a long standing invitation to travel to Pakistan where her friend operates the school for very poor children.

Added Mrs Miller: “Since Tesco gave me the items to take others have also donated things for the children. I think the people in Seaton are just fantastic.”

Rhoda Snell, from Tesco, said: “We were happy to be able to donate a few goods for Kathleen to take out as gifts for the children. These came from a surplus of end of season goods that had been reduced but not sold so we keep them for donations when suitable.”
