Cheaper bills for people across Exmouth came one step closer this week following reforms to the energy market by energy watchdog Ofgem.

The reforms will be in place by this summer and could affect bills in time for winter 2014. They follow plans set out by the Prime Minister last year to ensure consumers get the cheapest deal.

The Government’s Energy Bill includes making the market simpler by restricting suppliers to offering four simple core tariffs per fuel type.

Suppliers will be required to give all their customers personalised information on the cheapest tariff they offer for them.

And new rules will force suppliers to send clear bills which are easier for customers to understand.

The government hopes that he reforms willensure all customers will get the best deal on their energy bills by 2014.

Hugo Swire MP for East Devon said: “I know that people across East Devon are concerned about their energy bills and it is right that action is being taken to bring them down. Ofgem’s reforms take a big step in the right direction, and follow the Prime Minister’s promise last year to get the lowest tariffs for consumers.”

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, said: “The package we have announced is a huge step towards energy bills that are fairer for everyone. This is about putting people before profits. It’s about pensioners being better able to heat their homes in winter, and families better able to cope when the bills arrive.”
