EXMOUTH’s charity shave-a-thon not only caused a big buzz around town – it’s also raised over £4,000 in donations for Breast Cancer Care.

Organisers are thrilled, saying that the event – which recently took place in Exmouth’s pubs – was ‘absolutely fantastic’ and ‘more successful’ than they ever expected.

And, having had her head shaved for charity, the woman who inspired the event says she’d like to do it all over again.

That’s just as well, because there’s also news that the sponsored simultaneous snip is to become an annual event.

Organiser Mike Passant confirmed that the big shave on Saturday, January 11, had brought in a four-figure sum.

“The shave-a-thon has proved to be more successful than I could have hoped,” said Mike, speaking on behalf of the Living Church, the sponsors of the event and the British Legion.

“I am confident with the amount that I have already banked, and the other money that I know is still to come, that we will clear £4,000.

“It’s a great amount and it is due to the people of Exmouth who have come on board.”

Pen Reed, who first suggested the event to help her aunt, who has breast cancer, was equally delighted.

“What everybody has raised is absolutely fantastic and I’m dead proud of them all. I’d like to thank everybody in Exmouth for doing it. You’ve all been amazing!”

Mike thanked “the pub landlords and managers for getting behind us, the people who had the head shaves or waxes, who raised this amount through sponsorship, and the people who put up the money to sponsor friends or family”.

Apart from the sponsorship, extra donations also came in through jars left on the bars, where people put in loose change or notes.

More money is still to come from YouGive and the Heavitree brewery.

Meanwhile, Pen is ready to have another head shave.

“My hair has grown too quickly, and I want it done again,” she said. “I’ve got used to it being this short. It shocked me the first morning I woke up, but I’ve got used to it now.”

Mike added: “With this kind of support from the pubs and the public, we are going to have an annual Exmouth shave-a-thon, but picking different charities each year.”

He also thanked the Journal for its ‘wonderful support and great publicity’ of this year’s event, adding: “It has been a terrific help.”
