Cabbies in Strand roadworks plea

Taxi drivers in Exmouth have warned that highways chiefs could be liable for their damaged cars unless they make improvements to The Strand.

Cabbie Steve Glover of Cheshire Road said that a promised drop kerb in the taxi rank in the Strand, adjacent to the TSB bank, had not materialised despite promises made in 2011.

Mr Glover, the newly elected chairman of the Exmouth Taxi Association, made the comments as the taxi driver’s representative on the Exmouth Transport Partnership.

When the Strand was redeveloped, parking spaces on the southern end of the Strand were converted into a taxi rank.

The rank had been moved from the carriageway which was pedestrianised outside Exmouth Indoor Market.

But he said that because of the high kerb the ‘end space’ near Victoria Road resulted in damage to taxis trying to use it.

He said: “We had heard it was going to be done when the new bus shelter was being put up, but this was cancelled and so was the work.

“We still haven’t seen any improvements.”

Mr Glover, who has opearted a taxi in Exmouth for 21 years, added: “At the moment that kerb is causing serious damage to our motors.

“Because we can’t reverse into the end slot, we have to drive over the kerb, and if you keep kerbing your car you will wreck the back end.”

He said that they were told something was going to be done ‘over two years ago’ and said: “This was something we pointed out at the start of The Strand development and nobody wanted to listen to us

“Now somebody is going to have to seriously sit up and take notice because if they don’t we will get together and say ‘OK here’s the bill for the cars, lets sort this out’.

“And I can assure you it’s going to be a lot cheaper to make improvements.”

A representative of the county council said he would relay Mr Glover’s concerns back to the highways department.
