A Budleigh beauty queen is full of beans after being crowned as Miss Devon 2014.

Hayley Wood, 21, of Marine Parade, won the title at the final in Torquay on Saturday, writes Sean Keywood.

Her win means she will now represent the county at the final of Miss England in June, with the winner of that contest going on to compete in Miss World.

Hayley said: “It feels amazing – I really didn’t expect it. Obviously I worked really hard to try and be successful, but when they announced I was the winner it was still a massive shock.

“I was meant to go straight up on stage but I just ran over to my mum and gave her a big hug.”

Hayley was also given the title of Miss Beach Beauty at the final, held at Torquay’s Imperial Hotel, which she said then made it even more surprising to win overall.

Having previously held fundraising events for The Eve Appeal and taken part in the online Beach Beauty contest, Hayley’s day at the final began with an interview with the judges, who asked her about topics including her fundraising, which saw her take a bath in baked beans at her workplace The Salterton Arms, and her studies for a degree in psychology at Swansea University.

There was also an Easter bonnet round, for which Hayley made her own bonnet with help from friend Caz, dancing and an evening gown round. As well as mum Andrea, Hayley was also supported at the final by dad Ken, brother Henry, friend Robyn, and the Hushon family, owners of Budleigh’s Longboat Café, where she also works.

She said: “My family are so proud, they are over the moon about it. The support I have had has been fantastic.”

While still working and finishing her degree, Hayley will now be turning her attention to the Miss England final, which takes place at Torquay’s Riviera International Conference Centre on June 16.

She said: “I’m so excited about Miss England. This was my first ever pageant, and I’ve never even done anything similar, so to get this far is such a shock.”

Ahead of the June final, Hayley must do more fundraising, this time for the charity Beauty with a Purpose, and is currently coming up with ideas for events.
