Budleigh cliff fall engineered by district council

A ‘landslip’ on Budleigh Salterton seafront was caused deliberately by district council contractors, it has been revealed.

Fallen earth at a point halfway along the footpath between the Longboat Café and Lime Kiln has covered much of the width of the path.

However, while the debris strewn across the path looks dramatic, the fall was actually carried out in a controlled manner by contractors employed by East Devon District Council (EDDC).

District councillor Tom Wright, also chairman of the town council’s foreshores and footpaths committee, said: “On Thursday last week EDDC contractors carried out work purposely bringing down areas of the cliff they thought were potentially unstable.

“It is work EDDC was carrying out proactively when it was safe to bring it down, rather than having it fall on someone who might be passing.”

Although the work was carried out on Thursday, the rubble was left in place over the weekend, as similar works are being carried out all along the East Devon coast, and the removal will be coordinated to save money.

Cllr Wright added: “I have been assured it will be cleared away as soon as they can.”

A smaller cliff fall had occurred on the Budleigh path last month, at which time Cllr Wright said the council would be waiting for the winter storms to pass before carrying out repairs.
