Budleigh Salterton has won silver gilt in the latest Southwest in Bloom awards held in Weston-super-Mare.
Judges visited the town over the summer and assessed it against a range of criteria including floral displays and cleanliness.
A band of volunteers, led by chairman Pat Prew, worked feverishly to prepare the town – which was entered in the Ayre Cup for small towns.
She said: “We were very pleased with the result and our displays. We were only a few points off getting gold.”
Pat is now stepping down as chairman after seven years in the role and from the committee after 11 years. During her successful tenure the group have been awarded a gold award on five occasions.
She said: “I have really enjoyed myself, but it takes up a terrific amount of time. My husband and I want to spend more time travelling and we want to spend time with our grandchildren.
“Thank you to the fantastic committee we have had this year and we could not do this without the support of our town council, Streetscene, EDDC and the county council, and – most important of all – our sponsors and volunteer helpers.”
The chairmanship will be taken over by Bob Wiltshire, who said: “Pat has been inspirational to all of us on the committee with her no-nonsense approach and clear-sighted vision.
“She has put in a huge amount of time and efffort and held down a full-time job as well.Particularly on the seafront she is going to be a hard act to follow.”
