Since 2014, Budleigh Hospital League of Friends has been fighting to keep the facility for community and now the building has been officially reopened.

Hundreds of residents, patients, dignitaries and staff turned out on Friday (May 4) to witness the official relaunch of the hospital as a health and wellbeing hub.

Budleigh GP Dr Richard Mejzner, who is credited with the idea for the project, said: “It was just fantastic that so many people turned out and there was such a buzz around the hospital.

“It is just a great relief that we have got a fantastic asset for the community that will be more useful in the years to come.

“Unless we had come up with this idea, we would have lost the hospital. We just want to build on the opportunity it has provided.”

League of Friends chairman Dr David Evans said the grand opening of the hub was a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ event and one of the most important days in Budleigh’s history.

Speaking at the launch event, he added: “Of the highest possible priority to the League of Friends is the preservation of 130 years of priceless heritage.

“The fully refurbished health and wellbeing hub provides a clinical and social mix which meets the full requirements of the five-year plan for enhanced community services set by NHS England. We are proud to set a gold standard for others to follow, particularly at these challenging times in the NHS.”

Dr Evans was joined at the grand opening by Lord Clinton, whose land the hospital sits on, and Mary Nisbett, of Westbank Community Health and Care, which will be managing the hub.

Three-year-old Archie Corry – the youngest person to benefit from the hub’s services - helped to cut the ribbon.

Mayor Alan Dent welcomed the reopening of the hopsital, adding: “It’s the culmination of five years of negotiations and hard work by the League of Friends, local doctors and the NHS.”

The Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust approved plans for the hub back in March 2015 and negotiations were completed last year.

The lease was signed by both the health service and the League of Friends and some services moved into the hospital in autumn last year.
