Budleigh Salterton Lions Club were unable to hold their annual Duck Race due to the contamination of the River Otter. Read this and more.

DUCK RACE CANCELLED: Budleigh Salterton Lions Club were unable to hold their annual Duck Race due to the contamination of the River Otter.

The organisation asked Robin Burne to draw the raffle tickets.

Winners were: 1st prize of £200 to Mrs Ann Fairclough No 0953; 2nd prize of £100.00 Bran Miller No 0662.

Duck dinners: Shirley Keen 0116, Ruby Lindley 0988, Robin Burne 0710 Mrs Brooks 0784.

NO CITIZEN OF THE YEAR: A citizen of the year award for Budleigh Salterton will now not go ahead.

The idea had come from Mayor Courtney Richard and he said he would be willing to provide a cup to award annually.

He said: “I don’t want to inflict anything on the council that they don’t want so I will withdraw the offer. It is now off the table.

“I’ve got something else in mind now which will be outside the council.”

COMPUTER GIFT: Bicton College has donated 20 computers to the The Employment Academy (TEA) in Liskeard, Cornwall.

The computers were no longer needed due to recent heavy investment in their IT equipment.

The equipment will benefit the organisation which works with unemployed people and those seeking career change to increase their chances of progressing into full- or part-time employment.

Oliver Jones, who collected the computers from the college, said: “These computers will be of great value to our Welfare to Work programme, with IT skills and Digital Inclusion being central to increasing the employability of our learners.”

LIONS: Bingo is being held in the Public Hall on Wednesday, October 17 -, £1 for 10 games plus two fliers with proceeds to the Shandford Comfort Fund eyes down 7.30pm.

On Saturday, October 27 there is a ‘bumper’ coffee morning and stalls in the Public Hall from 10am to noon.

Various charity stalls, crafts, jewellery, bric-a-brac, books and raffle. Admission 10p.

NATIONAL TRUST: The National Trust Raleigh Centre is holding its annual sale and coffee morning.

It takes place on October 13 at Budleigh Salterton Public Hall, between 10am and noon.

Admission will cost 50p, including coffee (until 11.30am). Bric-a-brac, books, CDs, DVDs, cakes, jigsaws and garden produce will be on sale, and a raffle will be held.

COLLISION: Two cars collided on Monday morning at Sandy Cross, East Budleigh.

The collision happened at 2.55pm on October 1. One fire appliance from Exmouth attended the scene – all passengers and drivers were free and clear of both vehicles upon arrival of the fire service. Crews made the vehicles safe.
