Fraser Hillyard, 43, of Bedlands Lane, pleased guilty at Exeter Magistrates Court, to trespassing and stealing tyres from the former Salston Manor Hotel, in Ottery St Mary, on September 2, this year.

A Budleigh Salterton man stole tyres from an outhouse to help repair his daughter’s car, a court heard.

Fraser Hillyard, 43, of Bedlands Lane, pleaded guilty to trespassing on the grounds of the former Salston Manor Hotel, in Ottery St Mary, on September 2 this year, and stealing two tyres.

Magistrates sitting in Exeter ordered Hillyard to pay £100 in compensation and £100 in court costs.

The court heard how Hillyard had stopped at the site, where construction work was taking place, for a toilet break. The magistrates were told that, when he noticed that tyres on the roof of the former hotel’s outhouse matched those needed for his daughter’s car, he loaded two of them into his vehicle and drove off.

The court heard how Hillyard had been out of work after the company he previously worked for had gone bankrupt and he could not afford to pay for new tyres.
