This year’s late night shopping event in Budleigh Salterton has been hailed a success by traders.

Town centre shops extended their opening hours for the annual event, allowing customers to do some Christmas shopping under Budleigh’s iconic festive lights.

The event, organised by Budleigh and District Chamber of Commerce, is an opportunity for businesses to launch their Christmas and to thank those who have supported them in the last 12 months.

Chamber chairman Mike Hilliar said: “I felt the event was very successful there was a lot of people in the town and in the shops and the shop owners I have spoken to said it was a very good event and they did very well from it.

“I would like to thank all those shops and traders that opened and would also like to thank the people of Budleigh Salterton for braving the cold and supporting the local businesses in the town.

“We are all looking forward to next year’s late night shopping event.”

The festivities were launched with a carnival-like parade from the Public Hall, in Station Road, into High Street finishing at a grotto set up by Budleigh Lions Club in Fore Street, who also provided a barbecue for shoppers.

The procession, led by Father Christmas, also included the carnival club’s 2017 float.

Shops stayed open until 8.30pm with music provided by a carol service at Temple Methodist Church and a performance from the renaissance choir and the town’s ukulele players.
