A group of youngsters went 24 hours without internet and mobile phones to raise funds for poverty-striken Africans.

Members of Budleigh Salterton’s Methodist Adventure Group also created huts out of cardboard donated by Spar and slept on the church floor.

More than £400 was raised for Christian relief charity Tearfund. The money will be used to pay for a block of four organic toilets for a village in Africa.

The toilets will be ‘twinned’ with similar facilities at the church.

One of the group’s three leaders, Lee Shiel, admitted the youngsters were very pleased to get their mobile phones back at the end of the challenge.

He said: “We mimicked those in Africa the best we could – it was sleeping on the hard floor which was really difficult.

“It was a bit of a challenge to get them to give up their mobile phones and we told them they could have their phones back in an emergency.

“The group couldn’t wait to get their mobile phones back again.”

“They really bought into it - and I cannot believe the amount we raised.”

Lee was joined by fellow leaders Sue Bond and Pauline Dyer, who postponed her birthday celebrations to take part.

The 14-strong group was taking part in the Walk in Different Shoes scheme, which challenges youth groups to experience what those living in poverty go through.

Surviving on £1 a head, the group used the money to buy porridge oats, flour, sugar, butter, cheese, tomato sauce, milk, tea bags and bread.

They used some of the ingredients to create a pizza, which was shared around the group.

The Methodist Adventure Group will receive a certificate, which will tell them the location of the ‘twinned’ toilet.
