Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes face a real battle if they are to land a bronze medal when they take to the Weymouth waters for the final time in the medal race on Wedensday.

The penultimate day of racing at Weymouth was not kind to the Exmouth duo as they finished a disappointing 17th in the first of the days two races (race 14) and then improved on that to finish seventh in the final race of the day (race 15 in the series).

However, overall, it leaves them with a real battle in the medal race on Wednesday (August 8) if they are to grab, at the very least, a bronze medal.

What really hurt the Exmouth crew was the fact that the Danish crew finished third and ninth and the Finnish crew also had a good days’ racing with 11th and second place finishes and so those two boats now head the Exmouth pair in the chase for a bronze medal. The Australian and New Zealand boats looking like taking the gold and silver positions.

In terms of the overall positions heading into the medal race, the Australian boat looks destined to take gold and they will start with a score of 48 points with the New Zealand boat in silver with a total of 76 points.

There are five crews battling for the bronze medal it would, appear! Denmark sit third prior to the medal race with 108 points, one more than Finland (fourth) and six more than Morrison and Rhodes (in fifth place). Also in the mix are the French boat with 115 points followed so closely by the Austrian crew with 116 points.

All to sail for heading into the medal race which gets away at 1pm on Wednesday oce again back on the Nothe course. The Australian pairing of Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen have gold already wrapped up ahead of the race while Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (NZL) are also guaranteed silver.

Morrison said: “We have now got a fantastic opportunity to go out there in the medal race and put in a great performance. Given how random that course is we should go in with a good chance of winning a bronze medal.

“It was a pretty disappointing day for us today with some wacky racing, which didn’t quite seem to go our way. The first race we thought we were in a really good position but just seemed to be constantly on the wrong side of things, making it very frustrating. We have still got a pretty good chance of going out there and doing well.

“We came to this event to win the gold medal and that is no longer possible, so that’s disappointing. Nathan and Iain thoroughly deserve it, they have sailed fantastically. Apart from the Aussies, everyone has had mixed results. It’s a very high standard of fleet and the courses have been throwing up some very shifty conditions.”H
