The Exmouth Branch of the Royal British Legion members have been busy over the last few months building a large model of the trenches from the Great War.

It was decided back in January to build a third size replica of the trenches as part of the commemorations of the start of World War One with which the Legion can educate locals just what their own relatives went through 100 years ago.

Legion chairman Dave Turner told the Journal: “We plan on using it over the next four years as a reminder of what went on in our name. It’s still a work in progress but we are planning to show it at the Exmouth Festival and numerous other events throughout the year as well as in the carnival.”

The Legion will also be visiting local schools and engaging with the children to get them to look into their own personal family members’ stories from the time as well as letting the children see what life was like at the time and helping, in some way, with their education.

The model has been worked on by all ages of the local community from 87-year-old Len Taff Jones, who has been busy building scale model rifles for the figures of the soldiers to carry, to pupils from Exeter Road Primary School who have given up their own time to help paint it.

“The plan is to have around sixteen three-foot-high soldiers within the trenches which gives you and idea of the sheer size of the project.

“The end result will have flashing lights, sound and smoke giving a true feel of what our relatives went through.”
