Boat fuel thefts in Exmouth

Boat owners in Exmouth are being reminded by police to remove expensive equipment from vessels to deter thieves.

Police are urging boat owners in Exmouth to safeguard their vessel’s fuel and equipment in a bid to deter thieves.

The message comes after police received reports of two fuel thefts within the same week.

Police said a fuel tank was stolen from a boat moored opposite Exmouth Sailing Club sometime between Thursday June 12 and Sunday.

A plastic petrol tank containing fuel was stolen from a second vessel, also moored opposite the sailing club, sometime between Thursday June 12 and the following day.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone with information about the thefts, or if anyone saw someone acting suspiciously around the moored boats.

Karen Capey, police community support officer at Exmouth, said: “Police would like to advise all boat owners that at this time of the year there is often an increase in thefts of fuel tanks and outboard motors from boats.

“Police would like to advise boat owners it is best practise to remove fuel tanks, outboard motors and all other expensive items when the boat is moored and unattended.

“It is also important to security mark expensive items, log serial numbers and take photographs in order to identify stolen items and to be able to return them to their rightful owners if they are located.

Call police on 101 with information, quoting crime number CR/081826/14 in relation to the first incident, and quote CR/081600/14 about the latter.
