Town turns out in force to remember the casualties of war

Communities across the Axe Valley turned out in force on Sunday to honour the casualties of war.

Towns and villages across the region fell silent for two minutes at Remembrnace and Armistice Day commemorations on Sunday.

At Axminster the parade from South Street car park to the church was led by Royal British Legion standard bearers Valerie Clarke and Stan Fifer, along with Douglas Hull carrying the Union flag.

This year civic leaders and representatives of local uniformed organisations were joined by a large contingent of serving personnel from the armed forces.

The packed service in the Minster was led by the rector, Rev John Streeting

Afterwards the crowds gathered on the Minster Green for the exhortation, read by RBL branch president John Glanvill-Smith before the laying of 22 poppy wreaths by representatives from the uniformed groups and civic leaders, including Mayor Andrew Moulding.

Organiser Mervyn Symes, who read the names of the town’s fallen during the ceremony, said they were delighted with the large turnout.
