The Topsham to Turf swim is being held this year on August 2, with more than 100 swimmers expected to take part.

To help them complete the one-and-a-half mile challenge, volunteer kayakers are required to patrol the route, steering the swimmers in the right direction and guiding them to safety if they have difficulties.

Charity chief executive Rachel Gilpin said: “The swimmers are fantastic but it’s the kayakers who are the quiet heroes, giving up their time for free and being the key people who make the swim happen.

“It’s a serious responsibility but it’s done in a real party atmosphere. The kayakers wear coloured wigs to make sure them can be spotted quickly by swimmers in the water.”

As well as appealing for kayakers, there are still places left for swimmers to sign up.

Rachel said: “It’s our largest single fund-raising event of the year so we’re obviously keen for the maximum number of swimmers to join in.

“It’s a perfect day out for amateurs or for serious swimmers who have a rare chance to compete in an estuary event.”

Full details of how to join the event are on the charity’s website www.estuary-league-of-friends.co.uk, and can also be found in the charity’s two Topsham shops.
