A group of kitesurfers in the water off Exmouth last week sparked a rescue mission from the coastguard when it was feared they were in difficulty. Read this and more.

NO CAUSE FOR ALARM: A group of kitesurfers in the water off Exmouth last week sparked a rescue mission from the coastguard when it was feared they were in difficulty.

Portland coastguard tasked Exmouth coastguard rescue team to investigate a 999 call reporting up to seven people in the water on the sand bar in the river Exe. A Portland Coastguard spokesman said: “On arrival it was found they were undergoing kitesurfing training and were not in need of assistance.”

YOUNG DEVON: There are only a limited number of spaces left for teenagers in Devon on a free five-week programme being delivered by Young Devon in partnership with the British Red Cross.

Youngsters, who have finished their GCSEs or are in year 12, are encouraged to sign up before August 10.

The course, which starts on August 13, is part of a flagship Government initiative which aims to promote a more cohesive, responsible and engaged society by bringing young people from different backgrounds together to make a difference in their communities. VILLAGE ARTS: Woodbury Art and Craft Fayre is taking place at the village hall on July 28.

More than 20 stalls will be available, along with refreshments, and donations will be collected for St Swithun’s Church.

FREE BUSINESS ADVICE: The East Devon Branch of the Federation of Small Businesses is hosting its last business advice evening of 2012.

The free-to-attend event is being held from 6pm until 8pm at Escot Park, near Ottery St Mary, on September 27.

A spokesperson said: “As always, there is a whole host of different advisors to talk to, from HMRC and the Patent Office to thinking about going green or sorting an updated business plan. So if you own a business and you would like advice come along to the free business advice evening.”
