Exmouth train enthusiasts could get the chance to literally own a slice of railway history.

Rail users are celebrating the completion of track modernisation on their line.

Elderly jointed rails have given way to continuous welded track throughout the Avocet Line from Exmouth to Exeter.

And now the Avocet Line Rail Users Group (ALRUG) is slicing up the railway tracks to make souvenir paperweights.

The improvements have taken more than 10 years and locally based Network Rail engineer Nick Millington has been involved at every stage.

Now he has presented the final piece of old rail to the line’s passenger group ALRUG.

ALRUG chairman Tony Day said: “This is good work by Network Rail. Modern track gives a smooth ride, less wear and tear on trains and is easier to maintain. We are pleased to be the first local line in the West Country to achieve replacement throughout – we are, of course, also the
busiest!”
