The schools’ camp at Orcombe Point, Exmouth, will be reopening to schoolchildren in May.

The camp's official opening is on May 10, and re-opens as a residential outdoor activity camp run by Exmouth Watersports and Red Rock Leisure.

The camping ground has been used since the 1920s. The National Trust donated the land in 1959 by Miss Pratt (OBE) with the wish that it continued to be used by schoolchildren for camping.

The site was last used by Bristol City Council for schools’ camping in 2019. In 2022, the council decided not to reopen the site.

Red Rock Leisure Ltd, which manages Prattshayes Campsite on Maer Lane, Exmouth and Exmouth Watersports, took on the lease of the camp in 2023, and with the support of the National Trust has spent the winter working on the buildings and facilities in preparation for reopening the site to schoolchildren.

Red Rock Leisure Ltd has run the Prattshayes Campsite since 2015. Exmouth Watersports teaches windsurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking at Sideshore.

Jonathan Fisher, general manager for South and East Devon National Trust: “Exmouth Schools Camp offers a spectacular site overlooking the mouth of Exe estuary and bay, at the gateway to the world heritage Jurassic Coast. The National Trust is delighted to partner with Red Rock Leisure to honour the core purpose of the donor’s wishes to ensure that the site is accessible to schoolchildren for camping and outdoor activities. We have a responsibility to ensure that the camp remains publicly accessible and rich in wildlife.’’

John Morgan, managing director Red Rock Outdoor Limited: ‘’We are delighted to offer school residential adventure camps at Orcombe Point Exmouth Camp. While the children are with us they will enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, woodcraft, Archery tag, team challenges and more. Our aim is to give the children a great experience that will make treasured memories for them.’’
