Budleigh Salterton & District Hospiscare has been presented with a cheque for £1,750 by the local Lions Club.

The sum was raised through various activities by the Lions, including the sale of raffle tickets in the High Street, and a jumble sale and bingo evening held at the Public Hall over one weekend.

Budleigh Salterton & District Hospiscare is an independent local charity which raises its own funds to cover the costs of patients registered with Budleigh Salterton Medical Centre and Woodbury Surgery who are cared for by Hospiscare's end of life services.

The cheque was presented to Martin Briggs, chairman of Budleigh Salterton & District Hospiscare, and Claire Jones, fundraising and support manager, at the Lions’ business meeting on Tuesday, August 8.

Mr Briggs said: “Thank you and your fellow Lions for the magnificent fundraising carried out on our behalf.

“£1,750 is a truly amazing effort – beyond my wildest dreams!

“We are always impressed by the community engagement that the Lions are able to achieve, so it was a privilege to be the beneficiaries of your hard work and the generosity of your supporters.

“Please pass on our gratitude to all the Lions who helped to make the weekend such a success.

"We are financially independent of Hospiscare and do not receive any funds directly from the NHS or any other public bodies.

“We rely entirely on the support of the local community for our funds, and these funds raised by the Lions will help us to continue our important work in the community and make a real difference to local families in our area.”

Richard Allen, president of Budleigh Salterton Lions Cub, said: "We were delighted with the amount we raised for our local Hospiscare charity. Once again we must thank the generosity of the local community. Without their support we couldn't do what we do.

"Our motto is ‘We Serve’. Lions all over the world strive to make a difference in their local communities. If you would like to help serve your community or make a donation please visit our Club website."
