Archant

So how did King keep her nerve for the team showjumping when, with Nicola Wilson and Zara Phillips having had a fence down each, she HAD to go clear?

She said:” I had to get a clear, I couldn’t afford a mistake. William Fox-Pitt had gone clear and Tina Cook and I needed the same.

“I tried to pretend it was just training. It went ok. Archie was a bit nervous and jumped a bit flatter than he normally does but thank goodness he was clear. I was just so relieved. Then, once out of the arena, I leapt off Archie and shot back to watch Tina who was amazing and also went clear. She was so under pressure. We were so close to the Germans but we could have ended up with no medals at all as the teams behind us were so close.

“You just think ‘if this had gone better, if that had gone better’ but in the end the Germans were better than us!”

To win an individual medal Phillips, King and Cook had to jump again in the afternoon. A clear from Phillips moved her up the order but King and Cook had a fence down and disappointingly moved out of the medals that had been so tantalisingly close.

King added: “It’s the closing ceremony on Sunday, they want all the medal winners there and that will be the end of the big ‘whoosh’ that has been the 2012 London Olympics!”
