I have frequently noticed that, on visits to the Tesco and Lidl supermarkets, many of the spaces for Blue Badge holders, ie disabled drivers, are taken up by cars not displaying a badge.
This came to a peak last week when 75 per cent of the designated spaces at Tesco and 90 per cent at Lidl were occupied by presumably fit drivers, thus denying the space to someone who is unable to walk without difficulty.
I even watched a young woman motorist drive through the No Entry sign at Tesco’s car park, narrowly missing an elderly lady with a trolley, and park in a disabled bay.
She then ran into the supermarket and soon came back out with a packet of cigarettes in her hand and went to the cashpoint. She then ran back to her car, with a big smile on her face, and drove off, almost hitting a car reversing out of a bay as she did so.
I find this behaviour to be totally uncaring at best - it is downright selfish and lazy and it behoves the supermarkets to crack down on these pests.
On visits to different firms’ supermarkets on Merseyside, I noticed that this behaviour does not occur and I enquired why this should be.
I was told that £60 fixed penalty tickets are imposed on drivers who abuse the disabled bays and failure to pay leads to the drivers being excluded from the supermarket.
Apparently, very few tickets have to be issued as it is considered to be socially unacceptable to treat disabled people in such a way there.
Perhaps this should be implemented here in Exmouth as some drivers do not seem to have a conscience.
