It’s for walkers too

07:00 09 February 2013

You have recently published various articles publicising the use of the Estuary Trail for cycling activities.

They seemed to imply that it is a dedicated cycle path, ignoring that it is a shared space with walkers, dog exercisers, joggers etc.

I was recently using the pedestrian crossing in the bus station when I was struck by a bicycle wheel.

An irate lady cyclist informed me that I was impeding her progress on the cycle path!

When I pointed out that I was on a pedestrian crossing and that the Estuary Trail did not actually start for several hundred yards upriver, I received a stream of abuse.

I’m afraid this typifies the arrogance of many cyclists who repeatedly claim the trail as an exclusive cycle path.

Frequently on the trail, one is shouted at from behind by a speeding cyclist to get out of the way when a gentle tinkle on a bell (often not fitted) is all that is required to maintain harmony between the different users of this shared amenity.

It would help if in future you referred in your articles to the “Estuary Trail” instead of “the cycle path”.
