A battle of the brass bands was hailed a success when groups from Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Gloucestershire headed for Exmouth Pavilion.

Some 12 brass bands went head-to-head in the 13th Exmouth Brass Band Festival, which was promoted by the South West Brass Band Association (SWBBA).

Exmouth mayor Councillor John Humphreys presented the awards with Bruce Taylor of Miller Countrywide South West.

The bands and musical directors were praised for their high standard of playing, well thought out programmes of music, presentation and deportment.

Brian Elliott, SWBBA secretary said: “Considering the terrible weather experienced in the run up to the festival, the sun shone all day with temperatures in the mid-twenties allowing a huge and appreciative audience to enjoy the full programme of fringe concerts in the Pavilion gardens. Overall, the exemplary high quality of playing, deportment, presentation and friendly bonding of the bands with their public is a credit to the brass band movement.”
