Action over dogs

13:18 24 February 2012

I moved to Exmouth just over five years ago. I love this town, but for two things.

One: what is wrong with you dog owners who simply cannot pick up their dog’s faeces and dispose of them properly?

Guilty dog owners of Exmouth, you should feel ashamed.

My three children and I have had to develop a new game on our walk to school - ‘Spot the doggy mess’ - so we don’t have to tred in it or, worse still, push my buggy through it.

The second thing which disappoints me tremendously about the Exmouth community is your beach. Somewhere along the way, people of Exmouth have felt dogs should have more precedent over people and that their rights on the beach far outweigh those of a child.

We are not all dog lovers and it frustrated me beyond belief last Sunday, when I took my three children under the age of five, for a stroll along the beach.

Can you believe it, but five minutes into our walk and my eldest, Jamie, pipes up with “Look out, mummy, doggy poo”.

So my next move was to redirect the children to the sand dunes. No dogs there, right? Wrong. An adorable but feisty puppy bounded over and took a shine to my other child, Sonny, aged two.

Unfortunately, Sonny isn’t a great dog lover and is quite frightened of them so it didn’t help that this unleashed and lively pup chased him down the sand dunes, where he took a nasty tumble.

So let’s get this right, residents and councillors of Exmouth, it is impossible for me and my family to have a dog-free, safe experience on our local beach out of season.

I am not asking to completely ban dogs from the beach, but to restrict them to certain areas 365 days of the year. Rant over. For now, anyway.

Jamie, Sonny and Seren’s ranting mummy,
