Padbrook feel the Madeira power.
LAST week's matches began with a visit from Padbrook Park, writes Ron Stares.
The Mid Devon side arrived with a three rink mixed team to play what turned out to be a match that the home side held the lead in throughout.
After five ends the hosts held a nine shot lead and this had gorwn to one of 17 shots at the half way mark.
Despite the visiting team taking the honours on one of the three rinks, Madeira closed the game out 61-48(+13).
The best performing home rink was that of Freda Relph, Alan Halpin, Barbara Williams, and skip David Mears, who won by 13 shots.
The next visitors were the County Vice Presidents Association who arrived with a three rink men's team and this proved to be a match in which the home side did not have things all their own way.
After five ends it was the visitor's ahead, albeit by the smallest of margins, just one shot, but over the second quarter they edged that out to a lead of four shots.
That proved significant and, during the second half of the match they stayed ahead before sealing a 62-49 (+13) victory.
The one winning rink for the home side was that of Ian Healey, Alan Porter, John Killoran and skip David Hay, who won by 10 shots.
Last Friday evening just proved the point that, belonging to a Bowls Club is not just a case of rolling a ball over a green carpet, there is also a strong social side and, on this occasion, a quiz was organized by Sheila and Mike Webb whilst a cheese and wine evening was arranged by Jean Healey and Barbara Williams and, at the event, an impromptu raffle was arranged in support of the Children In Need appeal raising £69.13.
There were some 60 members who attended the evening and the quiz was won by the team comprising, Jacky and Tony Howie, Pat and Harry Cain, Eileen Bagley and Derek Blatchford.
I am sure that they will enjoy the nice bottle of wine they received as a reward for their efforts and so, with Christmas fast approaching, we look forward to several social occasions.
I do believe the next is a Christmas Bazaar and Coffee Morning at 10am on Saturday December 12.
lIn the Thursday Triples League, Budleigh B beat Madeira Green 27-7 and in the other match played, Exmouth Red beat Exmouth Green 28-12.
