SALTERTON DRAMA CLUB : THE GRAND OLD DUKE OF YORK
PICTURES BY TERRY IFE

Colourful costumes, superb scenery, charming children, talented teenagers, masterful mature panto experts and lashings of laughter all help to make the Salterton Drama Club’s The Grand Old Duke of York a sparkling pantomime not to be missed.

A dozen children from ages eight to 12 delight as gypsies, villagers, soldiers and servants and their We’re busy doing nothing is a real joy.

Seventeen-year-old Deborah Bazeley makes a striking Principal Boy, Colin, and 15-year-old Kara McLean a delicious Principal Girl, Melody. They look a real treat and move and sing beautifully. Fellow teenagers Rebecca Clark and Helen Oke make another pleasing pair as Jack and Jill.

Simon Blissett is outrageously funny as Dame Martha Muffett, especially when combining with accomplished comedian Mike Terry, who plays Tommy Tucker. There is more fun from Baron Snatcher’s henchmen Pye and Peas, played by Will Parrott and Ben Wilde.

Evil is portrayed effectively by Mark Bazeley as the Baron and Jean Phillips as wicked Fairy Mildew, and Karen Bazeley makes a fine match for them as Mother Shipton.

A regular contributor to the “Your Week” sections of the Journal, Roger Simmonds makes a rare stage appearance as Frederick, Duke of York.

The Grand Old Duke of York, written by Norman Robbins and directed by Mary Mulcahy, continues at the Salterton Playhouse today (Thursday) until Saturday, February 17, and Wednesday, February 20, to Saturday, February 24, at 7.30pm, with a 2.30pm matinee on the first Saturday.

Tickets, which are £6 for adults and £4 for children, are available from Budleigh Salterton Tourist Information Centre, Fore Street. Telephone: (01395) 445275.
