Taking on a muddy challenge
Commando Challenge 2007
SOME 4,000 people sprinted and crawled across the finish line covered from head to toe in mud in this year’s Royal Marines Commando Challenge fundraiser on Woodbury Common.
Both marines and civilians, including a team from Archant South West, Lisa Pearce, Dave Somerton-Rees, Tillie Dartnall-Smith and Tom Ambrose, put themselves through the rigours of either a three-mile or seven-mile run - complete with tunnels, sprints, and lots of mud and water, to raise money for good causes.
Competitors, aged 16 to 70, travelled from as far as South Africa to take part in the eighteenth annual race held over two days.
Commando challenge founder Alan Hardy said: “It’s the best event we’ve ever had. We are on target to raise more than £200,000 this year.
“We had to turn away about 3,000 people because we were oversubscribed so the message for next year is to book early.”
The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys and Dream-A-Way will receive funds from the race, with the rest being distributed by a local radio station’s charitable trust.
