THE beautiful blooms of summer were on display at Budleigh Flower Festival.
The four-day “Celebrating Salterton” extravaganza was staged at St Peter’s Church and featured displays by more than 40 groups from the Budleigh area.

These were dazzling in their variety with all kinds of flowers on show from simple meadow flowers to exotic gerberas and anthuriums.

Organiser Chris Parish said: “It was delightful that so many people in the town supported the event and the flowers were stunning.

Stunning displays

“There have been flower shows in the past, but these were church events, whereas this was very much a town occasion.

“There were displays from the town’s council, chamber of commerce, police fire brigade and cricket club. Thank you to everyone for their tremendous effort.”
The festival ran from Thursday June 16 to Sunday June 20. It was held to raise money for the Stroke Association, the Nserester Orphanage in Uganda and St Peter’s Fabric Fund.

More than £2,000 was raised through collection tins, with proceeds from the festival’s other events still to be counted.

A Friday supper was held with 110 diners tucking into tomato soup, turkey and salad, followed by strawberries and cream.

This was followed by a talk from Chris Bailes, a member of the Royal Horticultural Society and the curator of Rosemoor Gardens, Great Torrington.

Mr Parish said: “He showed us that a keen gardener can overcome the salty air and onshore breezes to create a wonderful garden by the sea.”

On Saturday, more than 250 people packed into the church for a concert by four singers from the Royal Opera House.
