I was unable to attend the presentation at the Pavilion on December 15 as I was unwell, so I am grateful to the Journal for publishing the proposed floor plan.
I note there are to be 60 bedrooms, but only 50 parking places. I must therefore presume that the ‘left-overs’ and the staff - and an hotel requires an army of cleaners - will be obliged to park along the seafront, thus depriving residents and visitors alike of available places.
Secondly, the footprint of the building seems surprisingly small. I cannot see how 30 bedrooms are to be accommodated on each of two floors unless each room is to be no bigger than a car parking space! Or is Premier Inn planning an unsightly skyscraper?
Thirdly, footfall. I much doubt that during the winter months, 60 businessmen will be visiting Exmouth every day and looking for hotel accommodation. And how will they travel here? If they come by train, I cannot imagine any self-respecting executive trailing his suitcase and laptop around the town looking for a taxi, then failing to find one, walking a mile along a windswept – and sometimes wave-swept – promenade to find a budget-price hotel.
Surely any Premier Inn should be situated at the transport hub, as it is at Exeter St David’s, with plenty of parking to spare. Otherwise I can foresee that three or four years down the line we shall be left with another expensive not-so-white elephant disfiguring the Exmouth seafront!
