I’ve been watching the “spat” between Ann Prior and Mike Newby, who appears to be operating in some form of wilderness, being a supporter of the EU, but he does need some facts to correct his “facts” gathered, he says, from the Guardian.
What a pathetic distortion of the truth he relays - the UK is one of the great trading nations of the world, but one which is being dragged down by the deadweight of the EU.
The following is taken from the Government’s own Red Book:
1. “Trade” is not the same as “exports” - almost 80 per cent of our total trade, or economic activity, is within the UK, so talk of “57 per cent of our trade being with the EU” is sheer nonsense. Not even 50 per cent of our international trade is with the EU.
2. Our total foreign trade is about 21 per cent of UK total trade, in other words, 79 per cent of our trade is internal. Hence, if we generously use the 50 per cent figure, the EU contributes less than 11 per cent of our total annual trade, made up of goods and services, income and transfers and that, after some 40 years of membership currently costing us £50 million per day!
3. Yet the other 89 per cent of UK business - which has little to do with the EU - is weighed down with compliance costs which far exceed any benefits, as businesses attempt to obey more than 50,000 regulations, and face another 3,000 every year, which seek to micro-manage our very existence!
It is well known and accepted by those with eyes to see, that we could, given the political will to quit the EU, establish a free trade agreement with the EU similar to those held by the USA , Switzerland , Norway, Japan and many other large trading nations. The EU cannot impose penalties on us under WTO rules. The EU has a huge balance of trade with us which strongly favours them and the UK is its biggest export market.
Outside of the EU, our free trade with the English-speaking nations of the world would expand enormously and be greeted happily by our old friends.
The EU and the Euro are failed, corrupt, un-democratic, socialist/Marxist experiments which we urgently need to rid ourselves of, especially as we the people, never agreed to joining such a doomed venture.
The EU is now finished and is sinking fast and it’s an urgent matter that we cut loose as soon as is possible - we need a clear, informed referendum to bring that about.
