Nikki Gilbert (Journal, January 26) criticises our town council for wasting “our money” on a referendum on the Longboat controversy.

How long has she lived in Budleigh Salterton, and how often has she attended a meeting of the town council?

The Journal has reported that the leaflets which have been distributed are a survey and not a referendum, and the town council has ensured that the costs are very low - roughly half a cup of coffee per household per annum in any cafe. Town councillors receive no fee for their work. Schools are funded by Devon County Council.

I have lived here for 46 years and attended most town council meetings for over 30 years.

I hope to meet Nikki Gilbert there as a regular visitor and occasional public speaker.
