Once again I would like to respond to a letter regarding the Exmouth War Memorial, this time from Tom Harvey-May.

1, The present problems did not arise in the ’20s, ’30s, ’40s and ’50s etc because children were far better behaved and had greater respect for their and other families’ war dead.

2, The names that are being damaged were not placed on the memorial until 2005.

3, The raised gardens and beautiful flower beds of the past were a distraction from youngsters who played near the memorial as they were in close proximity to the actual monument.

4, The damage that has and is being done is caused by the various items of the said youngsters, such as skateboards, scooters and even mountain bikes, not the people themselves, though their disrespect by running over it does cause distress and hurt to a lot of people whose family names are listed.

Let us not forget that, just a short time ago, Mr May wanted the whole memorial moved to a different setting, and even stated publicly that the cross was an insult to other religions, hence the memorial was listed as a Grade II monument to protect it.

As for the pictures submitted as a comparison in recently. The proposed fence originally submitted was only 18” (47cm) in height and was in fact, at the site meeting, agreed to by all present, East Devon District Council, Exmouth Town Council, Exmouth War Memorial Fund and the proposed ironworks, until the district and county councils had other ideas for the money.

I’m all for calling a meeting to form a new committee from ex-service associations as I will be standing down by Christmas and it will certainly save me, personally, many hundreds of pounds that I put in annually from my own pocket, but I will not stand down unless I’m sure no mistakes will be made.
