Plans to build 14 new flats in Exmouth have been opposed by town planners.

The plan is to build the flats at 14 Cyprus Road, with an existing building being demolished.

It has come about after a previous plan to build a care home on the site was scrapped by developers, who said they could not find anyone to manage it.

But Exmouth town councillors, who had also objected to the care home plan, argued that part of the reason that scheme had been approved by district planners was because it would provide employment – something which would not be a factor in private flats.

They voted to oppose the new plan, saying it would be over-development, would overlook neighbouring properties, would be against the avenues’ design statement, had an unsuitable finish, was too high, and would put pressure on sewer and drainage systems.

East Devon District Council will now consider the plan.
