AN APPLICATION to change the use of an Exmouth-based bed and breakfast to a residence for adults with a learning disability has been backed.

AN APPLICATION to change the use of an Exmouth-based bed and breakfast to a residence for adults with a learning disability has been backed.

The town council’s planning committee, at a meeting held on Monday, October 4, supported plans for a change of use for 53 St Andrew’s Road.

Normanlea Society Ltd, a charitable society which provides support and opportunities for adults with a learning disability in the Exmouth area, is purchasing the property.

Linda Williams, from the not-for-profit voluntary organisation, said: “We are purchasing the property of 53 St Andrew’s Road to provide supported accommodation for adults with a learning disability.

“These individuals will subsequently be entitled to packages of support, tailored to their individual needs.”

Despite the council’s decision to support the application, Lib Dem councillor Steve Gazzard refused to give his approval.

Mr Gazzard said: “My concern is that Exmouth is a tourist environment. We are losing more and more forms of accommodation as it is.

“I’m extremely worried about the prospect of losing another B and B in the town.”

Conservative councillor Madeleine Chapman supported the plans. She said: “I would like to back the plans. We have to think of Exmouth as an all-year round community. There is need for this kind of accommodation.”

The plans will now be considered by the district council.
