It was most interesting and informative to read the comment by our mayor, John Humphreys, regarding the lost £5,000 paid to the old Exmouth Tourist Information Centre in error.
After all, it is only £5,000, and it is the council’s money anyway, what does it matter?
What people tend to forget is that the council, as an entity, had no money at all of its own, only what it squeezes from the long-suffering rate payers of Exmouth, and who is going to notice a mere five thousand quid down the drain anyway?
I’ve got a better idea: why doesn’t the council, as a gesture of goodwill, pass the hat around the members, and collect the missing £4,273.53 to replenish the loss, or, perhaps fairer still, whoever was responsible for the loss, and whomever should have checked on the payment before it was made, should be charged for this sum of public money wasted, criminally wasted, on our behalf.
How does this strike members concerned I ask myself? Indignation at the revolt of the people who are only here to pay up and shut up, I suspect.
