Accountability

Your letters page on January 26 contains another message telling those of us pushing for a public inquiry into the £5,000 overpayment by the town council to the Tourist Information Centre to ‘shut up’.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

This is a repeated instruction to those who have the audacity to challenge the status quo in our lovely town. The writer goes on to tell us to ‘grow up’, but, then, with a wonderful sense of irony, fails to put their name at the bottom of their letter!

Being able to challenge public officials is at the very heart of democracy (just look at what is happening all over the Middle East), and those who have chosen to stand for public office and/or who are paid from the public purse, need to be held accountable for the money they spend, which is our money.

I wonder whether the writer would not complain if their bank took money from their account without permission. Would they be quite happy not to have it returned?
