Don't worry 'in-cars' it is easily done - most of the local planning committee do it.

I think with all this summer rain we've been having, an amusement arcade is exactly what is needed to get the holidaymakers off the streets.

It appears that those against it are other traders and bed & breakfast people - why? Is it that they don't want to share the tourist economy with anyone else?

These 'bed & breakfast' people just haven't got their finger on the tourist pulse have they?

Just a few hours on the esplanade will show that the majority of visitors getting off the 'day tripper' coaches along the prom appear to be middle aged to elderly, either from Wales or the Midlands - most of them are women - just straining at the leash to get at the slot machines and have a game or two of bingo.

Don't spoil their fun is what I say.

The 'bed & breakfast' brigade haven't yet realised there has been a change in the demographics here - there are more 'day trippers' coming in on the coaches looking for something to do (when it's raining) than there are guests staying in the hotels.

Decision day on the gaming licence today (Monday 13th) ...... I expect it will get passed despite some very valid and worthwhile objections that have been lodged with the Licensing Committee.

Huh? [:^)]

: The licence was granted by the sub-committee last Monday (13th October) - all systems go then?

The Gaming Licence was granted last Monday - I wonder how long it will now take to get the arcade up and running? Work on the premises seems to have been gathering pace - we'll probably have the slotties in place by Christmas.

sounds good somewhere to while away a wet day good luck to them.in budleigh an enterprising soul is trying to open a snack van on the seafront i am sure the good councillors of budleigh will support this as it could be a job creation possibility as will the propsed longboat cafe development.we can't stand still we have to create jobs for young local people to enable them to stay in their hometownsCool [H]

Petition? It's a bit late for that ain't it?

Confused [8-)]Huh? [:^)]

The Minutes of the sub-committee meeting can be found at the link below. There doesn't appear to be many valid points raised against the proposal by the objectors who attended. Unfortunately it just looks like pure and simple NIMBYism.

I can see the arguments for both sides but a cautionary tale - many years ago I worked in a leisure centre in Cornwall. Part of that enterprise was an amusement arcade. If ever there was a magnet for undesirables that was it. The worst case? We were descended upon by 100+ Hells Angels who appeared charming and polite during the day. In fact, they were researching the site and that night returned and 'did the place over' clearing off with cash, cigarettes ... anything they could lay their hands on. Certainly that's worst case scenario and, with luck, nothing like that will ever happen in Sidmouth but there's nowt so blind as them that don't want to see'.
