With press reports that the Sidmouth Carnival is under threat if no-one comes forward to assist with the running and funding - is it perhaps time to consider whether the format of the carnival is suitable in today's environmentally aware world?
Maybe the procession could be held during the day! There would be no need for the thousands of burning light bulbs - no need for each float to tow a generator truck spewing out carbon monoxide and the local shops would be open to attract the crowds after the lorries had passed.
